EPF Wage Ceiling Raised to ₹25,000: What Changes in Your Salary
The EPF wage ceiling went from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 a month on 17 September 2026. Capped PF rises from ₹1,800 to ₹3,000, more people must join EPF and EPS, and take-home falls by up to ₹2,400.

The EPF wage ceiling went up from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 a month on 17 September 2026. The Labour Ministry notified it as S.O. 5109(E) under the Code on Social Security, the first change since September 2014. Two things follow from it. Anyone whose PF wages are ₹25,000 a month or less must now be a member of EPF, EPS and EDLI. And if your PF was capped at the old ceiling, it is now worked out on up to ₹25,000, so the capped deduction rises from ₹1,800 to ₹3,000 a month, and your employer's share rises with it.
PF wages, not gross salary
The ceiling is tested against your PF wages: basic pay, dearness allowance and retaining allowance, with any allowances above half of your total pay added back under the labour codes. Gross salary does not decide it. EPFO's own examples make the point:
- Gross ₹50,000 with PF wages of ₹25,000: you must be covered, because the wages are within the ceiling.
- Gross ₹60,000 with PF wages of ₹30,000: coverage is not compulsory, though you can join voluntarily with your employer's consent.
The labour codes guide explains how the 50% add-back works.
What each level of wages now contributes
From the October 2026 wage month, for an EPS member:
| PF wages a month | Your share, 12% | Employer to EPS, 8.33% | Employer to EPF, 3.67% | Credited to your EPF |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹10,000 | ₹1,200 | ₹833 | ₹367 | ₹1,567 |
| ₹15,000 | ₹1,800 | ₹1,250 | ₹550 | ₹2,350 |
| ₹20,000 | ₹2,400 | ₹1,666 | ₹734 | ₹3,134 |
| ₹25,000 or more, on the ceiling | ₹3,000 | ₹2,083 | ₹917 | ₹3,917 |
Your employer also pays 0.5% for EDLI insurance and 0.5% in EPFO admin charges on the same wages, which is ₹125 each at the ceiling. None of that is credited to you.
Above ₹25,000 the statutory contribution can stay at the ceiling, and many employers will keep it there. If you already contribute on your full basic, nothing forces that down to ₹25,000; the PF deduction rules cover both arrangements.
What it does to take-home
Your own share goes up by ₹1,200 a month if you were on the old cap. Whether take-home falls by more than that depends on how your employer pays for its share. On a fixed CTC with employer PF inside it, the employer's extra ₹1,200 usually comes out of your special allowance, so gross salary falls too.
For a fixed CTC in the new regime, with basic at 40% of CTC and PF on the ceiling:
| CTC | Take-home a month, old ceiling | Take-home a month, new ceiling | Change | PF a month, both shares |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹6 LPA | ₹46,200 | ₹45,000 | −₹1,200 | ₹3,600 to ₹4,800 |
| ₹10 LPA | ₹79,533 | ₹77,133 | −₹2,400 | ₹3,600 to ₹6,000 |
| ₹12 LPA | ₹96,200 | ₹93,800 | −₹2,400 | ₹3,600 to ₹6,000 |
| ₹15 LPA | ₹1,13,356 | ₹1,11,143 | −₹2,213 | ₹3,600 to ₹6,000 |
| ₹20 LPA | ₹1,47,208 | ₹1,45,057 | −₹2,150 | ₹3,600 to ₹6,000 |
| ₹30 LPA | ₹2,07,112 | ₹2,05,086 | −₹2,026 | ₹3,600 to ₹6,000 |
At ₹6 LPA the basic is ₹20,000 a month, so PF only rises to 12% of that. Above ₹12.75 lakh of gross salary the drop is a little smaller, because the employer's PF is not taxed and a lower gross means slightly less TDS.
EPFO's FAQs say an employer should not treat its own contribution as an employee deduction just by calling it part of CTC. In practice, how a CTC is split is agreed in your offer letter, so read any revised structure closely. Every rupee of the difference goes into your EPF and pension accounts rather than disappearing. The in-hand salary calculator shows your own figures on the new ceiling.
September 2026 is a split month
The new ceiling started on the 17th, so September's PF is worked out in two parts: the old ₹15,000 ceiling for 1 to 16 September and ₹25,000 from the 17th. For someone on the cap that comes to about ₹2,360 for the month instead of ₹1,800 or ₹3,000. Employers file one return for September either way.
Where payroll had already closed, EPFO has allowed employers to recover the extra employee share from the next salary without prior approval, while still paying the full September amount on time. So some payslips show the catch-up in October.
Pension and insurance
- EPS membership. People earning ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 who were in EPF but not EPS, usually because they joined after September 2014 above the old ceiling, become EPS members from 17 September 2026. For new joiners, EPS is open if wages at joining are within ₹25,000.
- A bigger pension later. Pensionable salary can now be counted up to ₹25,000, subject to the EPS formula and conditions, which is where the higher employer share to EPS ends up.
- The government's share does not move. Its 1.16% EPS contribution stays on ₹15,000, at most ₹174 a month. EPFO says this does not affect the pension, which depends on pensionable salary and service.
- EDLI stays at ₹7 lakh. The wage-linked formula could now reach higher, but the maximum insurance benefit remains ₹7 lakh for now.
What it costs employers
For each employee on the ceiling, the employer pays ₹1,200 more PF a month plus ₹50 each in EDLI and admin charges, so ₹1,300 a month or ₹15,600 a year. Employees earning between ₹15,000 and ₹25,000 who were outside EPF now have to be enrolled, with contributions from 17 September 2026. If you run payroll for a small team, update each employee's PF line from the October run. In the employer payroll plan you change an employee's PF line once and every later run uses it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the new EPF wage ceiling?
₹25,000 a month, from 17 September 2026, under notification S.O. 5109(E). It was ₹15,000 from September 2014 until then.
Is PF now deducted on ₹25,000 for everyone?
No. PF is 12% of your actual PF wages up to ₹25,000. If your basic plus DA is ₹20,000, PF is ₹2,400. Above ₹25,000 it can be capped at ₹3,000, unless you contribute on your full wages.
Will my take-home salary fall?
If your PF was capped at ₹1,800, your share rises to ₹3,000, so take-home falls by ₹1,200 a month, and by up to ₹2,400 if your employer funds its extra share from a fixed CTC. The money goes to your EPF and EPS accounts.
Do employees earning more than ₹25,000 have to join EPF?
It depends on PF wages, not gross. If your basic, DA and retaining allowance at joining are more than ₹25,000 a month, membership is not compulsory, although you can join with your employer's consent.
Does the higher ceiling increase my EPS pension?
It can. Pensionable salary can now be counted up to ₹25,000 instead of ₹15,000, subject to the EPS formula, your years of service and the scheme's conditions.
When will the new PF amount show on my payslip?
September 2026 shows a pro-rated figure, because the old ceiling applied until the 16th. The full new amount starts with the October 2026 salary, which may also carry September's catch-up.
